The first definition of “hacking” listed in the Merriam-Webster dictionary is “cutting or severing with repeated irregular or unskillful blows”. Implying the ability to alter or destroy something without intent or practice, the words meaning has evolved over the past few decades in order to suit the technological advances of the 20th century. In an explanation offered on wisegeek.com, hacking is defined in terms of computing: “computer hacking is the practice of modifying computer hardware and software to accomplish a goal outside of the creator’s original purpose.. Since the word ‘hack’ has long been used to describe someone who is incompetent at his/her profession, some hackers claim this term is offensive and fails to give appropriate recognition to their skills”. Accordingly, there are varying levels of hacking and a wide range of impact on cybercitizens. More advanced/skilled hackers have obtained enough technological knowledge to break into highly secure network systems and cause damage, modify code, or erase information. On the other end of the spectrum, hacking can be used on a more individual level to gain access to gaming programs and the like. Currently, any dangers from hacking come from the “bad” hackers, or those known as “’black hats’ or ‘crackers’.. in search of notoriety, [bolstering] their egos, obtaining financial gain, and extracting malicious revenge” (Goessi). Now that almost everything is controlled (at least in part) online, these hackers have the ability to steal identities, propagate viruses and expose private information. Bummer. [ele]
